Volume 60 Editorial Platform: The Second Ever Woke Triumvirate

David King, Louanne Morin, and Ian Vansegbrook

Arthurians! Gays! Countrythems! Heed our call!

We come to you hand and knee, beseeching thee to elect our fair Squires David King, Louanne Morin, and Ian Vansegbrook into the Divine Editorhood of Volume 60 at this April’s Spring Elections.

After nearly sixty years of publishing profanities, obscenities, and everything else, we humbly seek to become the custodians of Arthur. We come to you standing on the knightly shoulders of Evangeline Robins and Abbigale Kernya, and while they set the tone for Volume 59, you may ask: Can we get much higher?

We reply in the affirmative: so high

WHO ARE YOU FREAKS?

David King is your prospective Editor-in-Chief. Kids these days call this being an “Alpha.”

David has an unmatched wherewithal in the administrative and journalistic minutiae of Arthur. Through his current roles as Journalist and Board President, his commitment to Arthur has spanned three volumes, the entirety of his sobriety, and a well-documented double mastectomy. The Editors of Volume 57 took a chance on him, and he knows the Staff Collective will chance him again for Volume 60.

Louanne Morin first came to Arthur at only 18 years old in her first year at Trent. She has learned the ins and outs of Peterborough’s myriad political minefields and is set to continue Arthur’s long history of Editor-Journalist mentorship. As Co-Editor, she will aid David in running the administrative side of Arthur while copy editing and continuing to report on local politics.

Also, Ian is here! He’s our diversity hire.

As Staff Collective Director on our Board, the titular Ian of Ianterviews, and the driving force behind Arthur’s new online presence, he is ready and able to take up the mantle of Digital Media Co-Editor. He’ll work on our video projects and social media presence while working directly with future journalists to explore other mediums.

He also wants to organize more Arthur events and socials. They’re fun and give a chance for Arthur to mingle with the community, as well as a chance for fundraising and promotion. We’re also certain this is a ploy for him to beat everyone at Mario Kart.

WHAT IS TO BE DONE?

With an all-new Editorship, we won’t deny that Volume 60 will be a learning curve. Evan and Abbigale are leaving some big shoes to fill, but we’re up to the task.

As members of this year’s Staff Collective, we’re eager to continue working with our journalists and volunteers, and will keep supporting them in creating high-quality, portfolio-ready work.

In reworking our staffing plan, we’ve ensured future financial stability while continuing to increase salaries. Under our budget, all staff will continue to receive a living wage according to Ontario Living Wage standards.

Our website needs a refresher, AND a search bar. The current Webflow site makes it difficult to access older articles. Arthur needs to be a living archive. Our jolly triad hereby pledges to take the current iteration of trentarthur.ca out Old Yeller-style, and continue to host our website for ourselves.

Connecting with the student body isn’t just about you reading our paper, it’s also about giving you the opportunity to write for it! Increasing our Honoraria and continuing to collaborate with the departments of Trent, we will establish new relationships and reintroduce special centerfolds like the much-beloved Lillith.

While journalism is ever-changing, coverage of local politics and interviewing skills are still mainstays of our work. We believe the best way to learn about the tricks of the trade is to hear it from the experts. As such, we will offer our newer staff workshops with different Peterborough journalists, alongside training on more specific skills such as finance document analysis and data journalism.

Speaking of new hires, we want more fresh faces! We’re not the only ones who have a lot to share, and we want to continue to foster Arthur’s learning environment for the future Editors of Volumes to come.

THE FUTURE OF ARTHUR

EXPAND OUR MEDIA EMPIRE

We will continue to increase our presence in the digital space by flooding YouTube, TikTok, and Bluesky with quality journalism. As Digital Media Co-Editor, Ian will sort out equipment needs and find more opportunities and outlets for our work. He’ll work hands-on with journalists to bring more sit downs and audio-interviews to our digital landscape.

Our staff will go through workshops and more comprehensive training on social media and audio reporting, furthering Arthur’s venture into the world of multimedia journalism. In collaboration with Trent Radio, Sadleir House, and the broader Trent community, we will introduce more of our staff to audio journalism and diversify the content of the Radio Free Arthur feed.

Through continuing our work with local institutions and student groups, as well as connecting with our fellow student papers nationally, we plan on truly ingratiating ourselves into the digital age, and reaching all the darned youth who are always on their damn phones.

FIND PRINTERS

Despite our recent lack of corporeal presence on campus, we haven’t forgotten about print media! We pledge to find new printers for our beloved rag and bring you quality print editions once again. On top of that, we’ll create magazine-style special editions featuring our collaborations with the Trent and Peterborough community.

Don’t worry! We’re adamant on keeping what you love in the mix: crosswords, puzzles, horoscopes, funny pictures of elected officials. We’ll also throw in an article or two.

HONOUR OUR ROOTS

Fifty nine years ago, the Beatles were all the rage.

In the 1960s, a young Stephen Stohn hand-drew the new name of Trent’s student-run weekly newsletter in Speedball blackletters. This simple doodle would christen our beloved rag as Arthur

Flash forward to now, we’ve made a gradual return to Stohn’s blackletter, which you’ve seen on the hats of Arthur’s strongest soldiers. We’re keen to show our roots during Volume 60, which is why the blackletter logo will appear on our print issues, website, and all Arthur paraphernalia.

Over the last sixty years, Arthur has grown exponentially into a full-fledged, award-winning publication, soaring beyond the imagination of our forebearers. We’re stoked to romp around in our weird history through this unorthodox Editorship, and it’s our hope you’ll join us in celebrating Arthur by electing us as its new stewards this Volume.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

"Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system."
