This Saturday, November 20th, community will gather in Confederation Park to commemorate Trans Day of Remembrance (TDoR) with a candlelit vigil. The event is being organized by PARN’s 2SLGBTQIA advocacy group, the QueeRAdicals.
Earlier in the day, from 1-3pm, there will be an online panel discussion with members of the Nogojiwanong trans community on the topics of ‘community, safety, and wellness’ living in Nogo-Ptbo.
What is Trans Day of Remembrance?
Trans Day of Remembrance is internationally recognized each year on November 20th, and honours trans, two-spirit, non-binary, and gender diverse people whose lives were taken by anti-trans violence. TDoR was established by trans activist Gwendolyn Ann Smith in 1999, after the brutal killing of Rita Hester, a Black trans woman in Massachusetts. In the two decades since, TDoR has been observed in dozens of countries, inspiring millions to work towards ending transphobia.
This day provides an opportunity to reflect on how we can support and uplift trans people in our community, and make Nogo-Ptbo a better, safer, more inclusive place for our trans siblings to live in.
If you plan on attending Saturday’s in-person event, physical distancing and masks are strongly encouraged. If you have any questions or for more information please email marty@parn.ca.
