Time, Effort and Connection: The Captivating Journey of Language Learning at Trent

We live in a world filled with diverse cultures where languages serve as a primary means of expressing values and identity. In this sense, it is essential to explore or have a basic understanding of how language learning enriches our interactions with people from different cultures. This exploration mainly lies in each individual's immersion in languages, which allows for new ways of thinking regarding popular topics of interest. That said, it is evident that getting involved in the varied linguistic world fosters our personal relationships with individuals whose languages are different from ours; however, delving into the process of learning a language can be a difficult task, especially in an academic context. Generally speaking, it requires a significant investment of time as it involves memorizing vocabulary that is often completely different from what we are used to in our mother tongue.

First of all, it is worth noting that my interest in languages arose from as far back as I can remember, but it deepened when I moved to Canada. Being immersed in a multicultural environment, I realized that learning languages is not just about speaking; it is about understanding different worldviews and building connections. At Trent University, I have continued to pursue this passion by enrolling in multiple languages courses, including French, German, Latin, and several linguistics-based courses. This journey has proven to be both exciting and challenging, providing me with numerous personal rewards along the way. Here I want to share some of my experiences, the benefits and difficulties I have encountered, and offer some recommendations for overcoming them.

Each language course I have taken at Trent has provided me with a unique cultural lens through which to view other cultures. For instance, learning French has deepened my appreciation for French culinary traditions, while studying Latin has connected me with the literacy legacies of Roman ancestors. Thus, these courses have led me from knowing nothing about the language to having adequate knowledge to communicate prudently with a native speaker. Don’t expect the courses to be tedious readings and long lectures; rather, anticipate dynamic lessons that promote active participation. In addition to traditional lessons, we engage in video projects that explore cultural topics related to the languages we study. This approach not only improves language comprehension but also boosts students' confidence in using the language in real-world situations.

Now, the benefits of learning multiple languages at Trent are numerous. Multitasking skills are enhanced as students balance memorizing tons of words with other academic responsibilities, developing better focus and time management. Personally, I have noticed considerable improvements in my ability to retain information. Switching between languages requires agility which has strengthened my study skills. Language learning has also expanded my understanding of global issues, broadening my worldview. Another benefit is the creation of social connections. The range of students willing to speak on campus has enriched this experience, allowing me to interact with people from diverse linguistic backgrounds. These interactions have opened doors to friendships and cultural exchanges I might never have imagined. On a professional level, being multicultural is a valuable asset in today’s globalized world. As I look to my future, I feel more competitive and ready to seize opportunities in international fields. Overall, learning a second language enhances cognitive ability, cultural empathy, and global connectivity, opening doors to various opportunities, as emphasized by research from Science and Literacy (n.d.).

However, it cannot be hidden that there are also difficulties. One of the biggest hurdles is time management. I often find myself overwhelmed with assignments for other reading-intensive courses in English. As a non-native English Speaker, I often need extra time to read and understand academic articles, which can cut into the time for reviewing vocabulary and language exercises. In light of all this, I set aside at least 35 minutes each day for language practice, helping me stay on track despite my busy schedule. Another challenge I have experienced is linguistic interference. When studying, it is common to mix up words, verb conjugations, or pronunciation, especially when fatigued and in languages as inflected as Latin or German. This phenomenon can be frustrating, but I remind myself that mistakes are an integral part of the learning process. Furthermore, each language comes with idiomatic expressions, which require additional effort to master. While these challenges are tough, I view them as opportunities for growth. They test my adaptability and resilience, skills that will serve me well in other aspects of life.

These day-to-day experiences in the continuous learning of languages are certainly challenging, but they enhance our organizational skills and persistence. Although stressful moments are inevitable, they often lead to unexpected discoveries. For example, during a group project in my French class, I initially felt intimidated by the prospect of collaborating on a video. However, my classmate and I quickly found common ground through our shared passion for languages. We worked together to tackle complicated grammatical points while sharing stories about our respective cultures, which made the project enjoyable. This experience reinforced my belief that taking a language course is not strictly about acquiring knowledge for a grade but about building relationships.

That said, some might wonder how to maintain progress without losing momentum. To stay on track and avoid burnout, I have adopted a few strategies. One of the most effective strategies is joining study groups with other language learners. This creates a sense of  mutual accountability and provides opportunities to share resources and tips. In addition, setting achievable goals for each language, such as mastering specific vocabulary ses or completing certain exercises, has helped me manage my workload more effectively. By breaking down the tasks into manageable steps, I have been able to maintain my motivation and reduce stress. Similarly, actively participating in class and asking the instructor for clarification when needed has proven to be an invaluable tool for staying engaged. Finally, one of the most important lesons I have learned through this process is not to fear making mistakes. Go into the classroom and contribute to the class energetically; making mistakes is learning and not trying is failure.

For me, mastering a new language in terms of vocabulary, grammar and syntax has been like unlocking a new part of the brain. In fact, it helps protect all learners, including older ones, against dementia and other neurological diseases, as noted in a study published by Cambridge University Press (2022). In this way, language learning stimulates our brain, being like a mental exerciser. Therefore, another reason why you should enroll in at least one Trent language course.

In conclusion, taking language courses has been one of the most rewarding decisions I have made. It has broadened my perspectives, enhanced my cultural understanding, and fostered meaningful connections with students from various backgrounds. Navigating the complexities of language learning can be daunting at times, but the academic development that one gains makes it all worthwhile. For anyone considering linguistics or simply interested in languages, I encourage you to embrace the journey. Celebrate the small achievements, learn from setbacks, and most importantly, enjoy the process. After all, each language is a door to a new world; are you ready to step through it?
