Tanya Blake’s Summer Qamp revolves around Camp Fyrefly, a summer camp and leadership retreat for LGBTQIA+ identifying youth in Southern Alberta. The inspiring documentary follows a single week of camp programming in 2022, and depicts a group of both returning and new campers as they develop a new sense of self-confidence and create meaningful bonds.

Camp Fyrefly offers a variety of traditional camp activities like archery, bracelet making, campfires, crafts, stargazing, rock climbing, and talent shows, as well as more queer-directed activities like a clothing swap where campers were able to choose gender-affirming apparel from a large selection of donated clothes.

Campers emphasized the isolation that comes with being queer in rural areas of Southern Alberta, and the challenges of exploring their sexualities and gender identities without any kind of community. For many, Camp Fyrefly acted as a much needed space for youth to navigate and discuss the complexities of queer identity while surrounded by supportive, accepting, and like-minded peers.

“I’ve never felt more supported anywhere else in my life,” said Ghoul, a genderfluid camper, “I’m so glad I’m making connections because making friends is hard when you stand out as much as I do.”

In depicting the forming of close friendships between campers of all gender identities and sexualities, Summer Qamp also features many vulnerable and meaningful conversations surrounding coming out, insecurity, self-expression, and pride. Campers also made valuable connections with the counsellors and staff team, who act as mentors and supports during their week of self-discovery.

The documentary’s interview-based style gives campers the opportunity to provide insight into their unique backgrounds and experiences with identity, as well as their fears and wishes about coming to Camp Fyrefly. This film did a great job of depicting the impact that a single week at camp can have, with the nerve-filled introductory interviews marking a stark contrast to the confident kids leaving on the final day of camp.

As someone who grew up going to summer camp, this documentary successfully captured the comfort and magic of camp, and I found myself brought back to that feeling of home while watching it.

Summer Qamp is a heartwarming film that gives viewers a glimpse into the queer joy, community, and love fostered at Camp Fyrefly.
