CUPE 3908 Unit 2, the union representing student academic workers at Trent University, is proud to announce the launch of the Gender Affirmation Fund in conjunction with Trent University. This fund, with an annual amount of $5000, is designed to support social, legal, medical, and other transition-related costs that CUPE Unit 2 members and their families may incur.
The Gender Affirmation Fund is available on a first-come, first-served basis to support CUPE Unit 2 members and their families who are requesting financial assistance. This fund understands that there are many reasons why an individual may not be able to access funding through OHIP, other government programs, or insurance. This may include unsupportive or nonexistent medical teams, religious choices, and the desire to choose a specific surgeon/medical procedure variation. This fund was created to eliminate barriers, not create more.
"We are excited to launch this fund and support our members in their gender affirmation journeys," said Mitch Champagne, the President of CUPE 3908. "We understand the financial burden that transition can put on individuals and families, and we want to eliminate those barriers so that our members can access the care they need."
The Gender Affirmation Fund is open to all CUPE Unit 2 members as well as their domestic partners and dependent children who identify as transgender and are in need of financial assistance for transition-related costs. Expenses covered by the Fund include, but are not limited to: surgery related expenses, gender affirming prosthetics/garments, clothing, legal documentation, and more. Members can find a more detailed list of expenses on CUPE 3908’s website, and are encouraged to apply regardless of if the expense they wish to claim is listed or not.
"We encourage members to apply to the fund," added Mitch Champagne. "We are here to support our members and their families, and we hope that this fund will help alleviate some of the financial burdens associated with transition."
To apply for the Gender Affirmation Fund, CUPE 3908 Unit 2 members can visit https://cupe3908.org/unit-2/, or contact the union for more information or to address any questions they may have.
