Chinese New Year, also called Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival, fell on Sunday, January 22, 2023. Lunar New Year is so aptly named as it marks the beginning of a new lunar cycle, and 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit. The Trent University Chinese Student Association (TUCSA) held a Lunar New Year event on Saturday, January 28, 2023, which I attended with great delight.
On October 27, 2022, the Canadian House of Commons unanimously adopted a motion proposed by NDP MP, Leah Gazan to recognize the Indian Residential School system as an act of genocide. It has now been three months since this motion passed and there seems to have been relatively sparse coverage regarding such a momentous occasion. One of the major questions many are wondering is what comes next?
Rumours of Alfred's death have been greatly exaggerated, as the current insert bears witness to. This horrible little paper, bred in the deepest pits of contempt for ingrained authority, bootlickers, and patsies of all description is the satirical (and deeply stupid) younger brother of Arthur. Be warned: This paper has no redeeming qualities.
With Issue Seven, Arthur's 57th Volume goes out with a proverbial bang. Having survived a malicious libel and defunding campaign wrought by Trent's best and brightest, Arthur is assured another year (at least) of funding. Beyond the top-notch reporting you've come to love and expect, the paper and its contributors come back swinging with "Alfred" - an insert which is not recommended for anyone under the age of 18 or who get offended by things they read.
Issue 3 arrives just in time for the holidays - when exam stress is at a peak and snow blankets the city making it even less pedestrian friendly than usual. As City Council weighs the relative worth of a human life, they're also faced with student demands for better transit. In the letters section, international students are sick of sexy bingos and demand action while a famous scientist writes about the lack of resources for STEM students in labs and libraries at Trent. Also, the debuts of new columns "Dear David" and "Cinevangelism." All this and more in the December Arthur!
This week we talked about Dave Smith being rude (sexist?) to Joy Lachica over a misunderstanding about how the Conservative Ontario government backed off a plan to defund the Ontario Arts Council by 15%. Thin skin much?
